The Spirit of Prophecy
Ellen G. White (1827–1915)
Adventists understand the biblical "gift of prophecy" (1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11, Revelation 19:10) as continuing in the church. Ellen White's seventy years of writing — devotional, theological, pastoral, and practical — are received as an exercise of that gift. Scripture remains the final authority; her writings are tested by it, never the reverse.

Resources for reading and study
How to read her writings
- Bible first. Start with Scripture. Use her writings to illuminate, not to replace, the Word.
- Read in context. Quotations taken out of historical or pastoral context can mislead. Read whole chapters, not isolated paragraphs.
- Begin with the devotional works. Steps to Christ is a one-week read and the gentlest introduction.
- Then the Conflict of the Ages series. Patriarchs and Prophets → Prophets and Kings → The Desire of Ages → The Acts of the Apostles → The Great Controversy. The whole narrative arc of Scripture.
- Test by Scripture. Isaiah 8:20 — "To the law and to the testimony! If they don't speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them."
